Habitat for Humanity of Horry County volunteers
serve in a variety of capacities. Some prefer the sweat and
soreness of the construction site while others prefer assisting
with administrative duties. Volunteers, 16 years of age or older,
can participate in all areas while younger volunteers, 10 year
to 15 years of age, can assist with special projects throughout
the year.
Volunteers can participate in the following ways:
Construction
In partnership with the community, we have built over 100
Habitat Homes since 1991. Volunteers work under the supervision
of trained Habitat Crew Leaders on all phases of the
construction process. Tasks may include: framing, trusses,
shingles, siding, drywall, painting, and landscaping. No skills
or experience with tools or building required.
DeConstruction
Since beginning the DeCon Program in July 2009 we have
successfully diverted building materials from over 20 homes or
properties from the landfills and sold them at discounted prices
in the ReStore to support our mission. Volunteers work as a
demolition crew to carefully remove building materials such as
cabinets, bathroom fixtures, doors, lighting, and trim work from
spaces being renovated by their owners. The volunteer crew is
led by a skilled Habitat Crew Leader. No skills or experience
with tools or renovations needed.
Lunch Provider
Habitat for Humanity of Horry County tries to solicit lunch
donations for the construction site volunteers during the entire
build of 3-4 months long. Lunch donations range from homemade
sandwiches, chili, and baked ziti to having pizza delivered to
the site to meals provided by local eateries. Each lunch
provider is responsible for the cost of meals but will receive
an In-Kind Donation Receipt for the meals provided for their tax
records. ReStore Assistance
Our Habitat ReStore, sells new and gently used donated building materials and
household items including furniture to the general public.
Volunteers provide assistance to the small staff and customers
of the ReStore. Duties may include: sorting and pricing donated
items, light cleaning, moving and lifting donations, and
customer assistance.
Office Assistant/Receptionist
Volunteers provide administrative and clerical support to
Habitat for Humanity's office. Duties may include: answering and
making phone calls, filing, typing, data entry, and
miscellaneous duties as needed.
Fundraising/Special Events
Throughout the year Habitat for Humanity organizes and
participates in various fundraising/special events. Past events
include the Annual Charity Golf Tournament, Belk Charity Days,
Tommy Bahama's Summer Luau, and Chick-Fil-A Easter Egg Hunt.
Volunteers are needed to man tables/booths, solicit sponsors, and
sell tickets.
Committee Member
Habitat for Humanity of Horry County has several committees
geared toward improving our affiliate and program. Committees
include: Marketing/ReStore, Construction/DeCon, Family
Selection, Fund Development, and Operations. Volunteers are
encouraged to attend monthly meeting to discuss current
policies/issues and offer solutions/ideas to increase the
affiliates productivity.
Recycling Partner
Volunteers partner with Habitat for Humanity to set up can
collection bins at local establishments, which may include their
place of employment, schools, or churches. Habitat provides the
bins and liners while volunteers bring the full bags of cans to
our ReStore to be recycled. |
